Group Visits

Greenwich attracts visitors from all over the world and is especially famous as the home of time.

  Greenwich Market
Greenwich Market

Standing outside the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park, the whole of London is spread out before you, an architectural landscape spanning five centuries.

The charming Georgian town centre is full of boutiques and independent shops and boasts several weekend markets.

Planning a group visit

Here are a few suggestions for planning a group visit:

a Allow at least an hour for each attraction that you plan to visit, longer if including the special exhibitions.

b If you are bringing a large group let the attraction know you are coming. .

c

A river cruise is a pleasant way of reaching Greenwich (see Getting Here).

d Coaches can set down passengers at Charlton Way for the Observatory, or in Stockwell Street in the town centre. From Charlton Way you can wander through Greenwich Park, admire the panoramic view over London and walk down the hill to the town centre. There is free coach parking on Charlton Way and Norman Road. Click here to see the location of the Coach Stop and Coach Parking. Stockwell Street has a 20 minute waiting limit for set down and pick up.

e We suggest that you choose a main attraction to start your visit. This can be combined with a guided tour or a pre-arranged meal. Most groups will appreciate free time to see another attraction or visit the shops. Greenwich Tourist Information Centre can provide advice and information about local guides, daily events and longer stays.

f The Thames Barrier, Firepower, the Greenwich Heritage Centre and Eltham Palace are all close by.

g There are plenty of hotels in Greenwich and Docklands which are ideal for a weekend break. Greenwich Tourist Information Centre provides an accommodation booking service.

h The Visitor Centre in the Old Royal Naval College grounds is closed at the moment but will re-open as Discover Greenwich in early 2010. Cutty Sark is also on course to re-open, after a comprehensive conservation programme, in 2011.
